Translation:
"In their hearts is a disease, so Allah increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they used to lie." (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:10)
Explanation:
This verse addresses the condition of the hypocrites. The "disease" in their hearts refers to a moral or spiritual sickness, such as doubt, hypocrisy, or insincerity. Instead of seeking truth, they continue to embrace falsehood, leading them further away from guidance. As a consequence, Allah allows them to persist in this state, increasing their sickness. Their punishment is severe due to their deliberate dishonesty and deceit. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of sincerity and truthfulness in faith.
Tafseer (Explanation):
This verse from Surah Al-Baqarah describes the condition of the hypocrites (munafiqeen) and their inner state. Hypocrites are those who outwardly claim to believe, but their hearts are not sincere. Allah states that there is a "disease" in their hearts. This disease refers to a spiritual and moral sickness, such as hypocrisy, jealousy, or insincerity, which keeps them away from the light of faith and leads them further into misguidance.
"فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ" ("In their hearts is a disease") means that they carry doubt, hypocrisy, and a love for falsehood in their hearts. This "disease" inclines them toward disbelief and dishonesty, making it difficult for them to embrace the truth.
"فَزَادَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مَرَضًۭا" ("so Allah increased their disease") implies that, as they continue in their hypocrisy and refuse to accept guidance, Allah allows their disease to intensify as a consequence. This increase is a form of punishment, as they turn away from sincerity and follow their desires.
"وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۢ" ("and for them is a painful punishment") highlights that a painful punishment awaits them due to their persistent deception and rejection of truth. Hypocrites claim belief outwardly while secretly harboring disbelief and dishonesty in their hearts, leading to severe consequences.
"بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَكْذِبُونَ" ("because they used to lie") further emphasizes that this punishment is specifically for their deliberate lying, deceit, and rejection of Allah’s guidance. This verse is a reminder of the importance of sincerity in faith and staying away from hypocrisy and falsehood. It urges believers to be truthful and sincere, both in their words and in their hearts.
