Marathon Monday in Boston: Celebrate Smart, Celebrate Together
Marathon Monday brings a contagious
energy to Boston. It’s one of those rare days where the entire city—and
especially the BU community—comes together to cheer on runners, share in the
excitement, and soak up the spirit of the Boston Marathon.
While the day is known for its
festive atmosphere, it’s a myth that everyone celebrates with heavy drinking.
In fact, the Spring 2023 BU National College Health Assessment found that
nearly one-third of BU students hadn’t consumed any alcohol in the past three
months. And among those who had, 75% drank only once or twice during that time.
So, if you plan to enjoy the day alcohol-free or just keep it light, you’re in
good company.
No matter how you choose to spend
the day, these six tips will help you stay safe, healthy, and have a great
time:
1. Stay Hydrated & Fuel Up
Marathon Monday is a full-day
affair. Start with a good breakfast, drink lots of water, and keep snacks on
hand so you stay energized throughout the day.
2. Pace Yourself
If you decide to drink, go slow.
Stick to one standard drink per hour and alternate with water or non-alcoholic
options. More doesn’t mean better—enjoy the day without overdoing it.
3. Skip the BORGs (Blackout Rage Gallons)
BORGs might look like a smarter way
to drink, but they’re risky. It’s hard to know how much alcohol you’re actually
consuming, which can lead to unintended and dangerous levels of intoxication.
Stick to drinks you can track and enjoy the day safely.
4. Know Your Limits—And Watch Out for Friends
Listen to your body and don’t feel
pressured to drink more than you’re comfortable with. Keep an eye on your
friends, too. More than half of college students have experienced
alcohol-related issues because of others, so it’s important we all look out for
each other. If someone’s not doing well, help them out or make sure they get
home safely.
5. Be Aware of the Good Samaritan Policy
If you or someone else needs help,
don’t hesitate. BU’s Good Samaritan Policy means you won’t face disciplinary
action when seeking medical assistance due to alcohol or drug use. On campus,
call BUPD at 617‑353‑2121. Off campus, call 911. Safety always comes first.
6. Cheer Loud for the Marathoners!
Boston’s marathon is legendary—the
oldest annual marathon in the world—and runners come from across the globe to
take part. Be sure to celebrate the athleticism and determination on display by
finding a good spot to cheer, like Kenmore Square or the corner of Beacon
Street and Park Drive along South Campus.
At the end of the day, Marathon
Monday is about celebrating as a community. Whether you choose to drink or not,
keep safety in mind—for yourself and those around you. Be smart, be supportive,
and have a blast out there, Terriers!
