Introduction:
The novel opens with the famous line:
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

As the French Revolution erupts, Darnay returns to France to help an old family servant but is arrested by the revolutionaries for being an aristocrat. Despite efforts by Lucie and Dr. Manette to save him, Darnay is sentenced to die.
Climax and Ending:
Sydney Carton, who looks very similar to Darnay, makes the ultimate sacrifice. Out of love for Lucie, he secretly takes Darnay’s place in prison and goes to the guillotine in his stead. His final act redeems his wasted life.
